Now both the upstream and downstream voyages are over, I am taking stock and trying to work out if they were a success or not. My own feelings are mixed, as are the evaluations and reports we receive from the intrepid who came with us. Some say it...

Hi Mike, thats correct. We met last year on the fam trip. Unfortunately they closed down their european river cruise operations. Now I work for Uniworld, although I still do some projects for Gate 1. Its unfortunately, because Gate 1 was doing a good job.

Thanks, Mike, AirportLiner is who I'm trying to contact. I can sign up on line, but I just want to hear from someone there to answer questions. Guess I'll have to try to call. Hope they speak English. Susan

Thank you. When I paid I took the insurance of my travel agent, Cruise Holidays, not Viking's, as I felt it more comprehensive...Protect Assist Gold Insurance.

I've booked a Rhine River cruise with Uniworld, traveling with my elderly (but healthy) mom. Any hot tips? Are the "optional shore excursions" worthwhile? We are both of German heritage and would enjoy some local color experiences. How about the dinner and music in Rudesheim?

Thank you. River cruising has become my favorite way to travel. I have had enough large ships and crowds. I try to take 3 or 4 river cruises a year. Your site should be very interesting and I hope to learn lots from your other members on river cruise companies, towns and costs. Again, thanks for the welcome.

Hi Mike - Thanks for the welcome aboard! My husband and I have taken many big ship cruises. We have not taken a river cruise yet, but are seriously considering one. This site looks like a good one to keep an eye on. Experienced travelers are the best source for accurate, and honest information. Look forward to chating with fellow travelers. Stacy

I got lucky! Actually, I need to delete one of the dining room photos. It isn't sharp. Will replace it with another.

Paul Strachan Pandaw Cruises

Published on 8 Nov 2009

Pandaw River Cruises, a small Edinburgh firm, has succeeded in navigating the Ganges between Varanasi and Calcutta in India, the first passenger service to do so since the 1920s.

Creating tourism opportunities on another great Asian river comes on top of Pandaw’s pioneering of the Mekong in Cambodia and Vietnam, the Irrawaddy in Burma and Borneo’s Rajang.

But Pandaw’s appeal to tourists lies not only its exotic destinations, but the ships themselves. The company’s six… Continue

Cruise Lines battle for the Mekong

If you believe the industry hype, river cruising is riding the rocket of small ship and adventure products in a rapidly growing cruise market. I tend to agree. The anecdotal evidence points to more travellers seeking out products away from the traditional sea and coastal routes and looking inland to the great waterways.

One of the most famous Asian rivers, the Mekong, is set to stage a great showdown as operators from all over the globe take on locals in their own “warships” in an attempt to ou… Continue

“Casual Cruising” for 2010 aboard luxury barge Esprit.

French Country Waterways announced a new program called “Casual Cruising” for 2010 aboard its 18-passenger luxury barge Esprit. “We understand that in today’s economy, some of our guests would prefer to have a few less inclusions and reduce their costs, so we have introduced a program that makes some minor changes in our regular program and passes those savings on to the passenger,” said President Glenn Carr. Pricing for this new style of barging is $2,495 to $3,495 per person, double. Guests ab… Continue

Safari along the Yukon River

Great River Journey, a luxury riverboat safari along the Yukon River, has two new itineraries for the 2010 season -- a four-night trip and a six-night excursion. The Great River Journey travels on the Yukon River, route of the First Nations, Gold Rush stampeders, and traders. Beginning in Whitehorse, the trip unfolds over 600 kilometers of Northern Canadian wilderness, thousands of years of indigenous culture, and 150 years of Gold Rush history to journey’s end in Dawson City. The shorter tours… Continue
